Wedding favors are traditionally small token gifts given to the guests attending a wedding; sugared almonds are one of the most traditionally given wedding favors.
Originally wedding favors were ‘sugar cubes’ gifted upon the guests in attendance at the weddings of wealthy European aristocrats, in those days the cost of sugar was significant and the giving of sugar cubes was a sign of both the hosts wealth and prosperity.
As the price of sugar fell those from the lower social strata’s began to imitate these wealthy European aristocrats by bestowing sugar cubes upon the guests of their own weddings. Due to this the aristocrats replaced sugar cubes as their wedding favour of choice with ‘sugared almonds’. Traditional wedding favour almonds with the almonds bitter taste and the sugary sweetness of its outer coating were said to symbolise the bitter-sweetness associated with marriage.

Traditionally wedding favour almonds were and still are presented to the wedding guests in beautifully designed confection bags or boxes. Five sugared almonds were traditionally presented to each guest, the number five signifying the qualities of: fertility, happiness, wealth, longevity and good health.
The great thing about sugared almonds as a wedding favour is that they can be bought in virtually any color from ivory to blue to red to silver to gold so can easily be coordinated to match with the overall wedding theme color(s).
Wedding favors today have become a traditional part of almost all wedding ceremonies and receptions, and whilst wedding favors have become more diverse in their range since the days of wealthy aristocrats and sugar cubes, the giving of small elegant sweets and gift bags to the guests still remains an extremely popular option with wedding planners and guests alike.
