Arguably the most terrifying movie monster/villain ever, ‘Pennywise’, the deranged psychotic clown, has earned his place amongst the likes of ‘Leatherface’, ‘Chucky’, and ‘Jason Voorhee’s’, as a legend of classic horror cinema.
Central to the plot of the Stephen King penned novel, and its movie adaptation, ‘IT’, Pennywise is the horrifying Demon clown that hunts down and torments the children of the town of Derry, Maine. Turning their fears and phobias against them.
Set in 1957-8 the story IT follows the exploits of seven children as they are terrorized by an inter-dimensional predatory life-form, that takes on the appearance of Pennywise the clown, in order to hide its true nature, and in order to get closer to the children that make up its prey.
Looking like a twisted cross between, ‘Bozo’, ‘Clarabell’, and ‘Ronald McDonald’ Pennywise easily outmatched all competitors on a poll I ran elsewhere as the scariest ‘Horror Movie Monster of All Time’, and not only is it surprising that such a popular horror movie has never (to date) spawned a sequel, but it is also one of the few horror movie classics to have avoided undergoing the modern 'remaking' process.
Awoken by Autumn storms the creature known as IT lurks the sewers, and in addition to appearing as Pennywise the clown it also takes on the form of: a giant bird, a werewolf, a leper, Dracula, and the shark from Jaws. But its true form here on earth is that of a giant spider.
