"Why is a raven like a writing desk?"

The Mad Hatter is one of the most loved characters from the novel 'Alice's Adventures in Wonderland' written by 'Lewis Carroll', and the Mad Hatters Hat is almost as loved as he. First encountered by Alice at was has come to be known as 'The Mad Hatters Tea Party' (despite it being held at the March Hare's house) the Mad Hatter spouts riddles and nonsensical poetry. Trapped forever at six o'clock, for his accused attempt to murder 'Time'.
The name the 'Mad Hatter' has been given to this character by fans of Lewis Carroll's story, for he was never referred to as such within the novel. Most likely inspired by the saying 'As mad as a march hare' the name has stuck, and the Hatters apparent madness is thought to be a result of his chosen trade, due to the fact that the Mercury often used within the hat-making process, when inhaled, would often leave hatters disturbed and mentally confused.
What kind of hat does the Mad Hatter wear?
Whilst Lewis Carroll herself does not specify the style within her tale, the illustrations drawn by 'Sir John Tenniel' to accompany it clearly depict the Mad Hatter wearing a 'Top Hat' perched upon his head.
'If you knew time as well as I, you wouldn't *dream* of wasting it!'
What does the "10/6" mean on the Mad Hatter's hat?
The numbers '10/6' as seen on the card tucked outside the Mad Hatters hat refer to 'ten shillings and sixpence' (otherwise known as a 'half-guinea') and is in fact the price of the Mad Hatters hat itself.

When is 'Mad Hatter Day' ?
The official Mad Hatter day (considered to be the second 'silly' day of the year following April Falls day) is of course held on the 10th of the Sixth (the 10th of June) in recognition of the numbers upon the Hatters hat.
Mad Hatter: Why is a raven like a writing desk? Alice: Riddles? Now let me see... why is a raven like a writing desk? Mad Hatter: I beg your pardon? Alice: Why is a raven like a writing desk? Mad Hatter: [alarmed] Why is a what? March Hare: Careful, she's stark ravin' mad! Alice: But it's your silly riddle. You just said... Mad Hatter: Easy, don't get excited! March Hare: How about a nice cup of tea? Alice: "Have a cup of tea," indeed! Well I'm sorry, but I just haven't the time!'
What is the answer to the Mad Hatters riddle?
Some believe it to be a reference to 'Edgar Alan Poe' who penned the poem 'The Raven' whilst writing at his desk.  Whilst Lewis Carrol herself has since stated that the answer is 'They both produce flat notes', in reference to the Ravens dull singing voice and letters produced at writing desks (which couldn't be any flatter).
However, due to the madness of the Hatter, perhaps it is safest to assume that his riddle is as suggested, the nonsensical musings of a man who he himself suspects, might have gone more than a little bit sideways.

'Mad Hatter: Have I gone mad? Alice: I'm afraid so. You're entirely bonkers. But I'll tell you a secret. All the best people are.'
