First released back in 1977, the Star Wars figures known as ‘12 back’ were the very first line of Star Wars action figures ever released. Produced by the ‘Kenner’ toy company, an American toy company founded in 1947, by Phillip, and Joseph Steiner, the Star Wars action figures within the 12 back range include the characters: Ben Kenobi, Chewbacca, Darth Vader, Han Solo, Jawa, R2-D2, Princess Leia, C-3PO, Luke Skywalker, Death Squad Commander, Stormtrooper, and Sand People. And as you can see are partially called 12 back’s because there were twelve characters released initially within the range, and partially because of the special card backings with which the action figures were released/held in place.
One of the most popular ranges of action figures ever released, and certainly one of the most collectible, the Star Wars range includes many rare and highly sought after releases, and the 12 back action figures make up some of the most collectible (and now expensive) of them all. How can I tell if my Star Wars Figure is a 12 back?
As suggested by the name, 12 back Star Wars action figures, display only the original twelve Star Wars figures on the card ‘back’ mounting. Displaying the original twelve standing in a straight line, underneath some info regarding the figures such as their height, and included accessories, and above the available vehicles, as shown in the picture (right). However, even vintage 12 back Star Wars figures will vary considerably in value, depending upon their condition, which is usually graded using the ‘C’ scale. With a C10 grading representing perfection, all the way down to C5 and below, which represents badly mistreated and semi-destroyed action figures.
And in addition, all of the original 12 back figures released by Kenner featured a distinctive product number: Luke Skywalker (38180), Princess Leia (38190), R2-D2 (38200), Chewbacca (38210), C-3PO (38220), Darth Vader (38230), Stormtrooper (38240), Ben Kenobi (38250), Han Solo (38260), Jawa (38270), Sand People (38280), and Death Squad Commander (38290), all of which can be found in the upper left corner on the front-side of the card packaging.
